A Little About The Angels
The Women’s Basketball Team, formerly known as Alfies Angels, was originally set up at the beginning of the 2001/2002 season by a fresher named Amy Tweed! Tweedy wanted to play basketball and found there was a high demand for it within the College. With a little help from some members of the Knights, she set up a weekly club to learn the basics of basketball. This soon developed into running drills and practicing game situations, this continued for two years. Amy won the Freshers Contribution Award at the annual Athletics Union Dinner for her efforts with setting up and running the team.
The following year (2003/2004) the team was run by new captain Debbie Greenwood and Vice-captain Sarah Doust, again trying to attract more girls to try out the sport. Throughout the season it became obvious that the girls wanted to do more than just play against each other every week at training. They wanted games. They had a brand new kit from their sponsors Molokos, but had no where to wear it. The Angels went on tour with the rest of King Alfreds sports teams to Lloret Del Mar and played their first competitive (even if hung over) games of basketball. Since then the girls have been entered into the SESSA Women’s League for the 2004/2005 season, and with new captain Becky 'Moomin' Thornton running the show, it should be a great first season for the Winchester Girls Basketball Team.
