In the late 1990's, a group of talented athletes at King Alfreds College of Higher Education in Winchester decided to set up a basketball club. They didn't have much funding or equipment to start with, but they had talent and determination! This first season, led by second year Yusef Elansari was a building year, getting the basics in place and getting ready for the beginning of the 1999/2000 Solent League Division Three Season.
At the beginning of the season the Knights, second year players such as captain Matt Denyer and Dean Carey were joined by a group of freshers led by future captain Mike 'Winkle' Hill and National League coach and player Richard Elliott. This season the Knights dominated the league behind big man Olu Taiwo and won the league title.
The 2000/2001 campaign started without Graduate Yusef Elansari and a few of the other big role players. Olu was still about but was on a sabbatical for the duration of the season! However in the crop of freshers they were able to gain a raw talent in Stuart Dickenson and a lethal 1 - 2 guard combination of Kevin Chase and Craig Sharland. With Mike Hill now leading as team captain the Knights looked set to reign supreme once again, but due to lack of experience, injuries and off court complications the Knights finished bottom of the Solent League and faced the next season in Division Three!
The man to take over the tough job of captain was second year guard Craig Sharland! This year the team was also first entered into a University league, BUSA, and therefore would be playing many more games. It was also the season the Knights secured a lucrative sponsorship deal from J.D. Wetherspoon and gained a deal with basketball uniform providers AND1. With a crop of freshers including Adam 'Spike' Jenkins and Donovan Farquharson, Richard Elliott dedicated to just coaching and the return of former captain Yusef Elansari, the Knights looked forward to the challenges ahead of them. Training up to three times a week and sometimes playing in up to three games a week made the 2001/2002 a hard season for the Knights, but through all of it they finished a controversial second in Division 3 of Solent (winners Portsmouth were later fined for cheating), made the semi-finals of the Solent Cup and finished fifth in their BUSA region. Not to mention a very alcoholic weekend at the Bradford University May Day Basketball Tournament! Overall a successful season.
Craig continued to lead the team for the 2002/2003 season, but this year had many ups and downs! Due to financial problems the Knights could no longer compete in Solent and were forced into the lower ranks of a disorganised SESSA league. Travel was a problem, other teams weren't turning up and the games that were played were very poor standard basketball and poorly officiated most times. On the plus side again Bradford was a huge success for those that went and the team gained some real talent and experienced players like Thom 'Louis' Attwood, Pete Edwards and Oliver Tilbury. The Knights overcame the problems in their way and gained promotion to the Premier division by finishing a controversial second again and proving that they were a serious team.
The 2003/2004 season was led by new captain Ollie Tilbury, with Thom Attwood as his vice and Craig simply running the social side of the team! A crop of fresh faced freshers with a range of ability came in. Again SESSA was poorly organised and games were few and far between, but the Knights continued to train hard and play friendly games against local competition. The team took boozing and partying to a new level all year and took its antics back to Bradford and also abroad to Lloret Del Mar, where boozing took priority over balling for the duration! A great end to a great season!
Although only finishing mid table in SESSA, after pulling out mid-season due to poor organisation, the Knights are now looking forward to the 2004/2005 season in BUSA. They have a strong foundation for a great basketball team. The 2003/2004 season saw the end of participation in SESSA but also for King Alfreds College (KAC) Knights due to the College changing its name. We move into 2004/2005 as Winchester Knights!
Still as serious!
Still as dominant!
Still as hung over!
And don't you forget it!
